What XML Formatter does

XML Formatter checks that XML is well-formed and reformats it with clean indentation, or minifies it. Errors are reported with their line and column, and comments, CDATA sections, entities and attributes are preserved exactly.

How to use XML Formatter

  1. Paste your XML
  2. Click Format to beautify, Minify to compress, or Validate to only check it
  3. Pick a 2 or 4 space indent if you are formatting
  4. Copy or download the result

Who should use it

Made for developers. Typical uses:

  • Making a minified API response readable before debugging it
  • Cleaning up an XML config file before checking it into version control
  • Reformatting an RSS or sitemap feed to inspect its structure

Limitations and accuracy

It checks well-formedness, not validity against a DTD or XSD schema.

Accuracy: Output is tested against known inputs. For production code, review the result and run your own tests.

Frequently asked questions

Does formatting validate the XML?
It expects well-formed XML to format correctly; malformed XML with mismatched tags will produce an error rather than silently fixing the structure.
Does it change the actual data in the XML?
No, only whitespace and indentation change โ€” element names, attributes, and text content stay exactly the same.
Is it free to use?
Yes, completely free.
Is my XML uploaded anywhere?
No, formatting happens entirely in your browser.
Can I format very large XML files?
Yes, though extremely large files depend on your browser's available memory.
