Free Social Media Mockup Tools for Instagram Posts, Stories and Chats
Social media mockup tools draw a picture of a post or a conversation so you can judge the wording and layout before anything is published, and one of them makes a text-on-gradient graphic sized for Instagram Stories. Type your caption, names or messages, check the preview, then download a PNG. They run in your browser and never connect to Instagram or WhatsApp.
Each image is drawn on a canvas on your device. The captions, names and messages you type are not sent to FreeToolsVerse servers, and nothing is posted to any platform.
🚫
Not connected to any platform
The tools cannot log in to Instagram or WhatsApp, and they cannot publish, send or read anything. They only make an image that you download and, if you choose, upload yourself.

Labels on the images
WhatsApp Chat and Instagram Post downloads carry a small mock-up label, and Story images carry a faint FreeToolsVerse credit. Keep the label on when you share an image.

Free, with no account
No sign-up or payment is needed to make or download an image. Open the page, enter your text and save the PNG.
Most popular social media tools
The tools most visitors start with, and what each one is for.
Use mockup tools to check captions, chat bubbles and text graphics before you publish, pick sensible image sizes, crop safely and know what a mockup cannot show.
Each group explains what its tools are for, so you can find the right one without scrolling a long list.
Instagram posts and Stories (2)
Plan an Instagram post or a vertical Story before you publish anything. The post tool lays out a username, caption, likes and comments in a feed-style card, and the Story tool makes a full-height gradient text graphic. Both download as PNG files.
Draw a conversation for a presentation, a storyboard, a tutorial or a clearly labelled joke. You write each message, choose which side it sits on and type its time, and the result is a WhatsApp-style image, not a real chat export.
Redraw the preview after each edit to see how a caption wraps, how long a chat bubble gets and how text sits on a tall 1080 by 1920 Story canvas.
Useful for slides, storyboards and teaching
Designers, teachers and presenters use mockups to illustrate a post or a conversation without screenshotting a real account, so invented names can stand in for real people.
Fixed, known output sizes
Story images download at 1080 by 1920 pixels, Instagram post mockups at 640 by 640 and WhatsApp chats at 400 pixels wide, with a height that grows with the number of messages.
Nothing to install or sign in to
There is no app to add and no platform login. You can make an image on a phone or a computer and the file downloads straight from the page.
Pairs with the image tools
Resize a photo to a social preset with the Image Resizer, or crop it to 1:1, 4:5 or 9:16 with the Image Cropper, then use the mockups to check the words that go with it.
How these tools are built and checked
All three tools draw with the browser's built-in canvas, using fixed dimensions and system fonts, so no image is fetched from a platform and nothing is generated on a server. The Story Generator always outputs 1080 by 1920 pixels, the Post Generator is 640 pixels wide and grows taller to fit a long caption, and the WhatsApp Chat Generator is 400 pixels wide. The WhatsApp and Instagram Post tools use the same shared mockup label as the Fake Tweet and Fake iMessage generators. The layouts are our own approximations of the apps, not official templates, and they will not match every app version, device or dark-mode setting. The linked guide spells out these limits, asks you to label mockups and says never to use one to mislead. Before you publish real content, check it in the app itself.
What are social media mockup tools for, and what are they not for?
They suit design comps, slides, storyboards, tutorials, classroom examples and jokes that are clearly presented as jokes. They are not for making fake evidence, impersonating a real person or brand, inventing customer reactions or harassing anyone. An image of a post or chat that never existed should be described as a mockup wherever you share it.
Can I put my own photo into the Instagram post mockup?
Yes. Use Add a photo in the Instagram Post Generator and the picture is cropped to fill the frame, as the app does. It is drawn on your device and never uploaded. To prepare the photo first, crop and resize it with the Image Cropper and Image Resizer, which also work on your device.
Will the mockup match the real Instagram or WhatsApp screen?
No. The layouts are approximations drawn on a canvas with system fonts and fixed sizes. The apps change their design often, differ between phones and in dark mode, and shorten long captions in ways these tools do not. Use the mockup for wording and proportions, then look at the real post in the app before your audience sees it.
Are the downloaded images labelled as mockups?
Mostly. The WhatsApp Chat Generator and the Instagram Post Generator stamp each download with a small label reading 'Mock-up made with FreeToolsVerse - not a real post'. The Instagram Story Generator makes a graphic rather than a fake screenshot and adds a faint FreeToolsVerse credit in the corner. Cropping out a label to pass a mockup off as real is not acceptable.
Are these tools affiliated with Instagram, WhatsApp or Meta?
No. Instagram and WhatsApp are trademarks of their respective owners, and FreeToolsVerse is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by them. The tools imitate a general layout and do not draw the official logos. If you publish a design that refers to a platform, follow that platform's brand guidelines and do not suggest that it endorses your work.
How big are the downloaded images, and can I print them?
Stories are 1080 by 1920 pixels. The Instagram post mockup is 640 by 640 pixels and the WhatsApp chat is 400 pixels wide, with a height that depends on the number of messages. All three are PNG files. They suit screens, slides and documents, but enlarging the two smaller ones for print will look soft.
