Pages built for upload forms with a hard cap. Each one starts with a lossless repack and lowers scan quality only as far as needed to get under 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB, then shows you the result.

Lossless optimize keeps text selectable, target size aims for a limit you set, and reduce quality redraws pages at 72, 110 or 150 dpi for scans. A result larger than your original is never offered.

Automated tests cover page-range parsing and real encrypt-and-decrypt round trips, opening the output with two independent PDF readers to confirm that a locked file refuses to open without the password. Compression reports the exact before and after size of each file, limits such as 150 to 200 MB per file are stated on the page, and every tool names the cases it cannot handle.
Lossless optimize keeps text, but once a repack is not enough the target-size and reduce-quality modes redraw each page as a compressed image. The page looks the same but the words become part of the picture. If you need searchable text, use lossless optimize or shrink the images before creating the PDF.
Use Compress to a target size and choose 200 KB. It tries a lossless repack first, then lowers image quality step by step until the file fits. A very small target may not be reachable for a long document, in which case the tool returns the smallest result it can and says so.
No. It does not crack or guess passwords. If a PDF needs a password to open, you must enter it. If the file opens freely but blocks printing, copying or editing, those restrictions can be removed without a password. Use it only on files you own or may change.
Not on their own. Permission restrictions are a courtesy that some software ignores, and only the open password gives strong protection. For a sensitive document, set an open password, which uses AES-256, and keep an unprotected original in a safe place because a lost password cannot be recovered.
Merging joins the files but does not compress them, so the result is about as big as the sum of its parts. Bookmarks and form calculations from the source files are also not rebuilt. Compress the largest inputs first, or run Compress PDF on the merged file afterwards.
A scan is a picture of a page, so it has no selectable text for the tool to extract. The same is true of PDF to Word. Render the pages with PDF to JPG and run the images through an OCR tool to recognise the text.
No. PDF Crop changes the visible page boundaries by the margins you set and does not edit the page content, so the trimmed area can still exist inside the file. Do not rely on cropping to hide confidential material, and check the result before sharing.
