What HTML Validator does

The HTML Validator checks your markup for the errors that break pages: tags that are never closed or closed in the wrong order, stray closing tags, duplicate ids and attributes, unclosed quotes and comments, and misuse of void elements like <br> and <img>. It understands HTML's optional end tags, so valid shortcuts like unclosed <li> or <p> are not flagged, and it also warns about missing alt text, obsolete tags and a missing doctype, title or lang attribute. Every issue is listed with its line and column, checked locally in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What errors does the HTML Validator find?
Unclosed and mis-nested tags, closing tags with no matching opening tag, duplicate id values, duplicate attributes, unclosed attribute quotes and comments, end tags on void elements such as </img>, and self-closing syntax on normal elements like <div />, which HTML ignores.
Why isn't my unclosed <li> or <p> reported?
HTML allows the end tag to be omitted for elements such as li, p, td, tr, option, dt and dd, so they are valid. The validator follows these rules to avoid false errors.
Is this the same as the W3C Markup Validation Service?
It is a fast syntax and structure checker, not a full conformance validator. It does not check every content model rule or attribute value, so use the W3C service for a complete standards audit.
Is my HTML sent to a server?
No. The HTML is parsed entirely in your browser.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up.
