You scan a stack of documents and half the pages come out sideways. Or you receive a PDF where one landscape page sits among portrait ones, and every viewer shows it turned. Rotation is the simplest fix in the PDF toolbox, and it is lossless, which makes it worth doing properly.
Why pages end up the wrong way
- Feeders and flatbeds. A document scanner feeds paper in a fixed direction, so pages inserted the other way round come out turned 90 or 180 degrees.
- Landscape sheets. A landscape page scanned as portrait is turned onto its side.
- Phone photos. A photo taken with the phone held sideways can be saved with its orientation unset.
- Mixed documents. A report that contains a wide table on one page often has that single page rotated.
How the Rotate PDF tool works
Choose a file in Rotate PDF and every page appears as a thumbnail, so you can see what you are fixing before you save it.
- Tap or click a page to turn it by 90 degrees.
- Use the arrows under a page to rotate left or right.
- Use the toolbar to rotate every page, flip all pages by 180 degrees, or reset your changes.
The rotated PDF is created in your browser, and the document is not uploaded. Files can be up to 200 MB.
What rotation changes, and what it does not
Rotation changes the orientation in which each page is displayed. The content on the page is not redrawn or recompressed, so there is no loss of quality, and the file size stays almost the same. Text stays selectable and searchable.
Rotation does not:
- straighten a page that was scanned a few degrees off. That is a tilt, not a turn, and needs scan clean-up software;
- crop away borders or resize the page. For trimming margins use PDF Crop;
- fix the page order. Use PDF Reorder for that.
Large files
Thumbnails are drawn for the first 120 pages. Later pages appear as numbered tiles that still rotate correctly, so a long scan is not a problem, but you will not see a preview of those pages until you open the result. Password-protected files must be unlocked first with Unlock PDF.
A reliable way to fix a scanned batch
- Open the file and look at the thumbnails for pages that are turned.
- Rotate the odd pages one by one. If most are wrong, rotate everything first, then correct the exceptions.
- Save the new PDF and open it in your usual viewer to confirm every page is upright.
- If the file also needs to be small enough for an upload, run it through Compress PDF afterwards.
- Add page numbers with PDF Page Numbers once the order and orientation are right.
Rotating in a viewer is not the same as saving a rotated file
Most PDF viewers have a rotate button, but it often changes only how you see the page on your own screen. When you send the file, the other person may still open it sideways. Saving a rotated copy, as this tool does, changes the file itself, so every viewer shows the page upright. After saving, open the new PDF in a different viewer than the one you normally use to confirm the pages stay turned the way you set them.
Prevent it next time
Put pages into the scanner the same way every time, scan landscape sheets as landscape, and check the first few pages of a batch before you scan the rest. A quick look saves rotating dozens of pages later.
