What Add Watermark to PDF does

Add Watermark to PDF stamps a text watermark on your pages, such as DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL or a name. Choose the text, place it once in the centre or repeat it across each page, and set the size, opacity, angle, colour and weight. You can watermark every page or only a range like 1-3, 5. The watermark is added in your browser and the file is never uploaded.

Features and benefits

  • Centre or repeated layout with proper centring at any angle
  • Control over size, opacity, angle, colour and bold
  • Watermark only the pages you choose
  • Private: nothing is uploaded

How to use Add Watermark to PDF

  1. Click or drop your PDF
  2. Type the watermark text and choose a layout: centre or repeated
  3. Set size, opacity, angle, colour and bold, and optionally the pages to mark
  4. Click Add watermark and download the stamped PDF

Who should use it

Made for everyone. Typical uses:

  • Marking contracts and proposals as DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL
  • Labelling sample answers, proofs and previews before payment
  • Adding a recipient name to a shared document
  • Stamping internal reports as not for distribution

Example

A 10-page proposal stamped with CONFIDENTIAL in red at 60 pt, 25 percent opacity and 45 degrees gets one diagonal word centred on every page while the text underneath stays readable. Switch to the repeated layout with a smaller size for a subtle pattern that is hard to crop out.

Limitations and accuracy

The watermark uses a standard PDF font, so it supports Latin letters, numbers and common punctuation only. Chinese, Arabic, emoji and similar characters are rejected with a message. A visible watermark discourages misuse but can be removed by a determined person; combine it with a password if the document is sensitive.

Accuracy: Files are processed with established open-source libraries and tested with real PDFs. Open the result and check it before you send or publish it.

Expert Tip

Use one or two short words at 20 to 30 percent opacity. Strong enough to notice, gentle enough that the page stays easy to read.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a watermark to a PDF?
Choose your PDF, type the text, adjust the look and click Add watermark and download. A new file ending in -watermarked.pdf is saved.
Can I watermark only some pages?
Yes. Enter a page range such as 1-3, 5 in the Pages box. Leave it blank to watermark every page.
What does the repeated layout do?
It tiles the text across the page in a staggered diagonal pattern, which is harder to crop out than a single watermark in the middle.
Why does my text with accents or symbols fail?
The standard PDF font covers Latin letters and common punctuation. Characters outside that set cannot be drawn, so the tool tells you instead of producing a broken file.
Can the watermark be removed?
A visible watermark is a label, not a lock. Someone with the right software can remove or cover it, so use a password as well for sensitive files.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The watermark is added locally in your browser.

Add Watermark to PDF: the complete guide

What a watermark is for

A watermark is text laid over every page to say something about the document as a whole: DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, SAMPLE, COPY, NOT FOR DISTRIBUTION or the name of the person it was prepared for. Businesses use them to label unfinished contracts, teachers to mark sample answers, and freelancers to stop proofs being used before payment.

A visible watermark discourages misuse and shows where a document came from. It does not stop a determined person from removing it, so it is a label rather than a lock; for real protection combine it with a password using PDF Password Protector.

The settings, explained

Every control changes something you can see straight away in the finished file.

  • Text is the wording. Keep it short: one to three words read best, and the text is limited to 60 characters.
  • Layout places one watermark in the centre, or repeats it across the page in a staggered pattern, which is harder to crop out.
  • Size sets the type size in points. Big text reads as a stamp; smaller text works for repeated patterns.
  • Opacity controls transparency. Around 20 to 30 percent keeps the page readable underneath; 50 percent and above starts to compete with the text.
  • Angle turns the text from 0 to 90 degrees. Forty-five degrees is the classic diagonal stamp.
  • Colour and bold let you match a brand or make the text stand out. Grey and light red are the most common choices.
  • Pages limits the watermark to a range such as 1-3, 5; leave it blank to mark every page.

Design tips that make it work

A watermark should be noticed without ruining the page. Place a single, large diagonal word for something like DRAFT, where visibility matters most. Use the repeated layout with a smaller size and lower opacity for a subtle "Prepared for Jane Smith" pattern that is hard to remove without leaving traces. Choose a colour that contrasts with your text colour: a pale red or grey over black text keeps both legible.

Check the preview by opening the finished file and zooming in on a page with dense text and a page with a photo. If reading becomes tiring, lower the opacity or reduce the size and save again. Because the process is instant, small iterations are easy.

Characters and fonts

The watermark is drawn with a standard PDF font (Helvetica), which covers English and most Western European letters, numbers and common punctuation. Characters outside that set, such as Chinese, Arabic or emoji, cannot be drawn by the standard font, so the tool tells you instead of producing a broken file. If you need such text, add it as an image: create it in an image editor, convert it with JPG to PDF, and overlay it in a PDF editor.

Pages that were rotated with a page-level rotation flag are handled, so the watermark still appears at your chosen angle on screen.

Order of operations

Watermark near the end of your workflow. Merge, split, rotate and compress the document first with Merge PDF, Split PDF, Rotate PDF and Compress PDF, then stamp it, then protect it if needed. Note that using the lossy mode of the compressor after watermarking turns the whole page, including the watermark, into an image.

Privacy and limits

The watermark is added in your browser. The file is never uploaded, so it is safe for contracts, proposals and internal reports. Files up to 200 MB are accepted, and password-protected files must be unlocked first with Unlock PDF. The original is untouched: the tool downloads a new file named with -watermarked at the end.
