Quick answer

Which resolution should I choose when converting a PDF to JPG?

For most screens choose 150 dpi: an A4 page becomes 1241 × 1754 pixels. Use 72 dpi for small previews and the smallest files, 200 dpi for reading small print, and 300 dpi when the image will be printed.

Pixel size of a page at each resolution
ResolutionA4 in pixelsUS Letter in pixelsUse it for
72 dpi595 × 842612 × 792screen, smallest
150 dpi1241 × 17541275 × 1650good quality
200 dpi1654 × 23381700 × 2200high quality
300 dpi2481 × 35072550 × 3300print
Formula:
Pixels = inches × dpi. An A4 page is 8.27 × 11.69 inches and a US Letter page is 8.5 × 11 inches.
Assumptions:
Pixel counts grow with the square of the resolution, so 300 dpi has four times as many pixels as 150 dpi. Very large pages are capped at 8,000 pixels on the longest side.

These figures are computed with the same formulas as the PDF to JPG above. Change the inputs in the tool to see your own result.

What PDF to JPG does

PDF to JPG draws every page of a PDF as a real image and lets you download pages one by one or all together as a ZIP. Choose JPG or PNG, a resolution from 72 to 300 dpi, the JPG quality and which pages to convert. Text, images and fonts are rendered exactly as they appear in the PDF, including PDFs with Chinese, Japanese or Korean text. It runs in your browser, so the PDF is never uploaded.

Features and benefits

  • Converts every page to its own standalone image so you can share, embed, or edit them individually
  • Lets you download a single page or the whole document as a batch of images
  • Preserves the page exactly as it looks, including layout and formatting that plain text extraction would lose
  • Useful for pulling a visual page into a slide deck or web post where a PDF file won't display inline
  • Runs in-browser so the source PDF isn't uploaded anywhere

How to use PDF to JPG

  1. Choose the PDF (enter its password if it asks for one)
  2. Pick JPG or PNG, the resolution and, if you like, a page range such as 1-3, 5
  3. Click Convert and watch the page previews appear
  4. Download single pages or all pages as a ZIP

Who should use it

Made for everyone. Typical uses:

  • Extracting a single page from a PDF as an image to share or embed
  • Converting a scanned PDF into images for a photo-based workflow
  • Creating image previews of each page in a document

Example

A real-estate agent has a 12-page property brochure as a PDF but needs just the floor-plan page (page 7) as an image to post on a listing site. They upload the PDF, convert it, and download page 7 as a standalone JPG that can be inserted directly into the listing without sharing the whole brochure file.

Limitations and accuracy

Very large pages are capped at 8,000 pixels on the longest side, and very long PDFs at high resolution can be slow or run out of memory in a browser, so convert a page range instead. The output is an image, so text is no longer selectable; use PDF to Text if you need the words. Files over 200 MB are refused.

Accuracy: Files are processed with established open-source libraries and tested with real PDFs. Open the result and check it before you send or publish it.

Expert Tip

If you need the text itself rather than a picture of the page, use PDF to Text instead — PDF to JPG is for when the page needs to look exactly as it does, not for extracting the words.

Frequently asked questions

Does it convert every page?
By default yes. Enter a range like 1-3, 5 to convert only the pages you need.
Which resolution should I choose?
150 dpi is a good default for screens and documents. Use 300 dpi for printing and 72 dpi for small previews.
What is the difference between JPG and PNG?
JPG gives smaller files and suits photos and scans. PNG is lossless and keeps text and line art sharper, but files are larger.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
Yes, if you know the password: the tool asks for it and then renders the pages.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The pages are drawn in your browser with pdf.js.

PDF to JPG: the complete guide

When you need a PDF as pictures

A PDF page is a set of instructions for drawing text, shapes and images at any size. A JPG or PNG is a fixed grid of pixels. Converting turns the drawing instructions into a picture, which is exactly what you need when a website, presentation or chat app accepts images but not PDFs, or when you want to post one page on social media or paste it into a slide.

Typical cases are sharing a single page of a brochure, pulling a chart out of a report, using a scanned certificate as an image attachment, turning a menu or flyer into a picture for a messaging group, and creating thumbnails or previews for documents.

Resolution: 72, 150, 200 or 300 dpi

The resolution setting decides how many pixels the finished image has. An A4 page at 72 dpi is about 595 by 842 pixels, which is fine for a small preview; at 150 dpi it is about 1,240 by 1,754 pixels, a good general choice; at 200 dpi about 1,654 by 2,339; and at 300 dpi about 2,480 by 3,508, the size used for printing.

Higher resolution means a sharper picture and a larger file. Pick the lowest resolution that stays readable in its final use. A page shown on a phone screen does not need 300 dpi, while a page you plan to print at full size does. The tool limits the longest side to 8,000 pixels so very large pages do not exhaust your browser memory.

JPG or PNG?

Both formats are offered because they are good at different things. Photographs and scans look natural as JPG and are much smaller. Pages made mostly of text, diagrams and flat colours look crisper as PNG, because PNG does not blur the edges of letters the way heavy JPG compression can, but PNG files are larger.

  • Choose JPG for scanned pages, photos and anything you will email or upload under a size limit. Keep the quality at 85 to 90 percent for a good balance.
  • Choose PNG for slides, charts, screenshots of documents and small text that must stay sharp.
  • PNG pages have a white background in this tool, because most PDF pages are drawn on white and leaving them unpainted would look black in some viewers.

Convert only the pages you need

Leave the page field blank to convert every page, or enter pages such as 1-3, 5 to convert only those. When several pages are converted you can download them one by one or all together as a ZIP file with sensible names such as report-page-01.jpg. If you only need one page as a separate document rather than a picture, Split PDF is the better tool.

The reverse direction is just as common. To put pictures back into a PDF, use JPG to PDF, which lets you reorder the images and choose the page size.

Fonts, languages and protected files

Pages are drawn with the same engine that powers a browser PDF viewer, using bundled font and character-map data, so text in Chinese, Japanese and Korean, embedded fonts and non-standard encodings render the way they do on screen. If a PDF needs a password to open, the tool asks for it and uses it only in your browser.

A converted page is a picture. If you need the text itself, use PDF to Word, or, for a scanned page that contains no real text, run the picture through OCR - Image to Text.

Tips for good results

Convert at the resolution you will actually use, then shrink further only if needed with the Image Compressor. If you want an exact size for a profile picture or a thumbnail, finish with the Image Resizer. To understand which output format suits your situation, the guide to JPG, PNG and WebP explains the differences.

Nothing is uploaded. Each page is drawn in your browser and the images exist only in your tab until you save them, which makes the tool safe for private documents such as contracts and identity papers.
