What Alt Text Checker does

The Alt Text Checker scans the HTML you paste and lists every image with its alt text status: missing, empty, too generic (such as "image" or a filename) or fine. Missing alt text hurts accessibility for screen-reader users and gives image search less to work with, and this shows you exactly which images to fix.

How to use Alt Text Checker

  1. View your page source (Ctrl+U) and copy the HTML, or paste just the part you want to check
  2. Paste it into the box, or click "Try an example"
  3. Click Check alt text
  4. Add or improve the alt text on flagged images, using an empty alt (alt="") only for purely decorative images

Who should use it

Made for marketers and seo. Typical uses:

  • Auditing a blog post's images before publishing to catch missing alt text
  • Checking an e-commerce product page for accessibility compliance
  • Reviewing an older section of a site for images that predate an alt-text policy

Limitations and accuracy

It reads the HTML you paste and does not fetch live URLs or look at the images themselves, so it cannot tell whether a description is accurate. Images added by JavaScript after load appear only if you paste the rendered HTML.

Accuracy: Results show what the tool can measure at the moment you run it and can differ from what search engines see. Use them as guidance.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as generic alt text?
Placeholders such as "image", "photo" or "picture", or a raw filename like IMG_2034.jpg. Good alt text briefly says what the image shows in context.
Should decorative images have alt text?
They should have an empty alt attribute (alt="") so screen readers skip them. The checker treats an empty alt as intentional and reports it separately from a missing alt.
Does it fix the alt text for me?
No. It finds the problems; you write the descriptions, since only you know what each image shows.
Does missing alt text hurt SEO?
It removes a signal Google uses to understand images and to rank them in image search, and it hurts accessibility, which matters for all visitors.
