What Citation Generator does

The Citation Generator builds reference-list entries in APA 7, MLA 9 and Chicago (bibliography) style for websites, books and journal articles, and shows all three at once. It handles author names in either order (with initials for APA, "and" and "et al." for MLA, and multi-author rules), organizations as authors, missing dates and missing authors, and keeps the italics each style requires when you copy. The formats are checked against the examples published in the style guides.

How to use Citation Generator

  1. Choose the type of source: website, book or journal article
  2. Enter the authors (in "Jane Q. Doe" or "Doe, Jane Q." form), the title and the publication details
  3. Read the APA, MLA and Chicago versions, which update as you type
  4. Click Copy with italics to paste into Word or Google Docs, or Copy plain text

Who should use it

Made for everyone. Typical uses:

  • Building a reference list for a research paper across multiple citation styles
  • Formatting a website citation correctly when a professor requires APA
  • Converting a source's publication details into a properly punctuated bibliography entry

Limitations and accuracy

It covers websites, books and journal articles only; other source types (videos, podcasts, legal cases, social media posts) are not supported, and it creates reference-list entries rather than in-text citations. It cannot look up details from a URL, so enter them yourself, and it does not change the capitalization of your title: type it in sentence case for APA and title case for MLA and Chicago. Always compare the result with your instructor's or publisher's requirements.

Accuracy: Output is produced in your browser and is meant for convenience. Check it before you use it for anything important.

Frequently asked questions

Which citation styles are supported?
APA 7th edition, MLA 9th edition and Chicago 17th edition (bibliography format), all shown side by side.
Does it fill in the details from a URL?
No. You enter the author, title, date and other details, which keeps the reference accurate for pages that have no clean metadata.
How do I cite a source with no author?
Leave the author blank. APA moves the title to the author position, and MLA and Chicago start the entry with the title.
How are multiple authors handled?
APA lists up to 20 authors with an ampersand before the last; MLA lists two authors and uses "et al." for three or more; Chicago lists up to ten authors.
Can I keep the italics when I copy?
Yes. "Copy with italics" puts formatted text on your clipboard, so book titles and journal names stay italic when you paste into Word or Google Docs.
Is my source information stored?
No. Everything is formatted in your browser and nothing is saved or sent.
