The Slug Generator turns any title, product name, or sentence into a clean, URL-safe slug — lowercase words joined by hyphens, with apostrophes, punctuation, and accented characters stripped or transliterated. It's free and runs entirely in your browser, so you can generate as many slugs as you need without an account or a server round-trip.
Made for marketers and seo. Typical uses:
"How to Bake Perfect Sourdough Bread at Home" becomes how-to-bake-perfect-sourdough-bread-at-home (43 characters). With filler words removed it is bake-perfect-sourdough-bread-home, and with a maximum length of 20 it is bake-perfect.
It cleans text but does not check whether the slug is already used on your site. Letters outside the Latin alphabet are dropped unless you tick "Keep non-Latin letters". If you change the slug of a live page, you need a 301 redirect from the old address.
Accuracy: Results show what the tool can measure at the moment you run it and can differ from what search engines see. Use them as guidance.
Expert Tip
Decide the slug before you publish and keep it short, lowercase and hyphenated. Changing it later means setting up a redirect so that links and search traffic are not lost.
A slug is the readable part of a web address that names a page, such as how-to-bake-sourdough in example.com/blog/how-to-bake-sourdough. The Slug Generator turns any title into a clean slug as you type. Paste several titles, one per line, and you get one slug per line, each with a character count and a copy button. You can choose a hyphen or an underscore, set a maximum length, remove filler words, keep or drop capital letters, and keep non-Latin letters.
These results come from the generator with its different options.
Short slugs that contain the main words are easier to read, share and remember, and they show up in full in search results, where long addresses are cut off. The tool warns you when a single slug is over about 60 characters. Use lowercase letters and hyphens, because addresses are case-sensitive on many servers and Google treats a hyphen as a space between words, while an underscore joins words together. Leave out dates, numbers that will go stale, and words that add nothing, such as "a" and "the".
By default, letters outside the Latin alphabet are dropped, so "日本語 Tokyo" becomes tokyo. Tick "Keep non-Latin letters" and the same title becomes 日本語-tokyo. Browsers display such addresses correctly, but they are percent-encoded when copied, which makes them long in emails and chats. For sites in languages such as Japanese, Arabic or Hindi, it is worth deciding on a policy once: native-script slugs help local readers recognise a link, while transliterated slugs are easier to type and share.
Choose the slug before you publish. If you change the address of a page that already has links or search traffic, set up a permanent (301) redirect from the old address to the new one, or visitors and search engines will find an error page instead. You can check the redirect with the Redirect Checker. Keep the slug in line with the page title and the heading, which you can write with the Meta Title Generator and check with the Heading Tag Checker.
The tool cleans text, but it does not check whether the slug is already used on your site. Different pages need different slugs, and the Sitemap Generator can list the final addresses. If the title is made up only of symbols or unsupported letters, the tool tells you that nothing is left after cleaning. Everything is done in your browser.
