"How much can I make from ads?" is one of the first questions website owners ask, and one of the hardest to answer honestly, because earnings depend on your topic, your audience and your layout. This guide explains the arithmetic, what RPM really is, how much traffic different income goals need, and the factors you can and cannot control. It gives no guarantees, because nobody can.
The basic formula
Website ad income is traffic multiplied by earnings per visit. In practice it is measured per thousand pageviews:
Daily earnings = pageviews รท 1,000 ร page RPM
Page RPM is the revenue you earn for every 1,000 pageviews. It already combines how many ads are shown, how often people click and how much each click is worth, so it is the most useful number for planning.
A worked example
A site has 1,000 visitors a day, and each views 1.5 pages, so there are 1,500 pageviews a day. At a $5 page RPM, the daily earnings are 1,500 รท 1,000 ร $5 = $7.50. That is about $228 a month and $2,737 a year. At a $2 RPM the same traffic earns about $91 a month, and at a $12 RPM about $548 a month. The spread is why planning around a range is more honest than picking one number.
How much traffic for a monthly goal?
Divide the goal by the RPM and multiply by 1,000 to get monthly pageviews.
- $150 a month at $5 RPM: 30,000 pageviews a month, about 1,000 a day
- $500 a month at $5 RPM: 100,000 pageviews a month, about 3,300 a day
- $1,000 a month at $5 RPM: 200,000 pageviews a month, about 6,600 a day
- $1,000 a month at $10 RPM: 100,000 pageviews a month
Traffic of that size takes time to build. Most sites grow slowly through search, so it is sensible to plan in months and years.
What affects RPM
- Topic. Advertisers pay more to reach people interested in finance, insurance, legal services and software than in general entertainment.
- Audience location. Visitors from higher-income countries are usually worth more to advertisers.
- Device. Mobile and desktop earn differently.
- Layout and ad placement. Ads that are visible without spoiling the reading experience perform better than ads that are hidden or intrusive.
- Content quality and speed. Pages that keep visitors reading and coming back have more valuable traffic.
- Season. Advertising budgets are usually higher in the last quarter of the year and lower in January.
What is a sensible starting assumption?
Real RPMs vary from under a dollar to well over $20 depending on the factors above. For a new site with a general audience, plan with the low end of a range, for example $1 to $5, and treat anything higher as a bonus. Your real RPM appears in your ad reports once you are earning, and you should replace guesses with it.
The requirements come first
AdSense earnings assume that your site is approved. The programme reviews sites for original, useful content, easy navigation, required pages like a privacy policy and contact details, and a good experience for visitors. Thin, copied or automatically generated pages are unlikely to pass. It is sensible to build real content and steady traffic first, and to apply once the site is clearly ready.
What not to do
- Do not click your own ads or ask friends to click. It violates the programme policies and can lead to a permanent ban.
- Do not buy low-quality traffic. It earns little and can put your account at risk.
- Do not fill pages with ads at the expense of the content. It lowers user satisfaction and often lowers earnings too.
- Do not expect a stable monthly amount. Earnings fluctuate with traffic and demand.
Use the calculator
The AdSense Revenue Calculator estimates daily, monthly and yearly earnings from visitors, pages per visit and either a page RPM or a CTR and cost per click, and includes a table that shows the same traffic at RPMs from $1 to $20. If you publish videos, the YouTube Earnings Calculator uses views and CPM. To judge whether spending on promotion is worthwhile, use the ROI Calculator, and to see how many sales a product-based site needs, the Break-Even Calculator.
