Quick answer

How much is a 20% tip on a $86.00 bill split 4 ways?

A 20% tip is $17.20, which makes the total $103.20. Split 4 ways, each person pays $25.80, of which $4.30 is tip.

Tip, total and share on a $86.00 bill split 4 ways
Tip rateTipTotalEach person
10%$8.60$94.60$23.65
15%$12.90$98.90$24.73
18%$15.48$101.48$25.37
20%$17.20$103.20$25.80
25%$21.50$107.50$26.88
Formula:
Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100. Total = bill + tip. Each person pays total ÷ number of people.
Assumptions:
The tip is worked out on the amount you enter, so enter the pre-tax subtotal if you tip before tax. The bill is split evenly and tipping customs vary by country.

These figures are computed with the same formulas as the Tip Calculator above. Change the inputs in the tool to see your own result.

What Tip Calculator does

The Tip Calculator works out the tip on a bill and what each person pays when the check is split. Enter the bill, the tip percentage (or tap 10, 15, 18, 20 or 25) and the number of people. The result updates as you type, showing the tip, the total with the tip and each person's share, plus a table of the same bill at 15, 18, 20 and 25 percent for comparison.

How to use Tip Calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount
  2. Type a tip percentage or tap one of the quick buttons
  3. Enter how many people are splitting the bill
  4. Read the tip, the total and each person's share, and compare other rates in the table

Who should use it

Made for everyone. Typical uses:

  • Calculating tips at restaurants and cafes
  • Splitting dinner bills with friends equally
  • Determining appropriate gratuity for services

Example

On an 86.00 bill split four ways with a 20% tip, the tip is 17.20, the total is 103.20 and each person pays 25.80. At 15% the tip would be 12.90 and each person would pay 24.73.

Limitations and accuracy

It splits the bill and tip evenly, so it does not handle people paying only for their own items. It uses one tip percentage for the whole bill, shows amounts without a currency symbol, and tipping customs vary by country and service.

Accuracy: Formulas follow standard published methods and are checked against worked reference examples. Results are estimates based on the values you enter and do not replace advice from a qualified professional.

Expert Tip

If the group wants to tip on the pre-tax subtotal rather than the total including tax, calculate the tip on that specific amount rather than the full receipt total -- sales tax isn't something you're expected to tip on.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use the Tip Calculator?
Enter the bill, type a tip percentage or tap a quick button, and enter the number of people. The tip, total and per-person share update immediately.
Should I tip on the amount before tax?
It is a matter of preference. To tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter the subtotal as the bill to get the tip, then add the sales tax to the total yourself.
Can I compare tip percentages?
Yes. A table under the result shows the tip, total and per-person amount at 15, 18, 20 and 25 percent for the same bill.
What if a service charge is already on the bill?
Many restaurants outside the United States add a service charge. Check the bill before adding a tip, and enter 0 as the percentage if you do not want to add one.
Is my data safe?
Yes. The calculation is done in your browser and nothing is sent or stored.

Tip Calculator: the complete guide

How the calculator works

The Tip Calculator takes the bill, a tip percentage and the number of people, and shows the tip, the total with the tip added and what each person pays. It updates as you type. The quick buttons set the tip to 10, 15, 18, 20 or 25 percent, and a table below the result shows the same bill at 15, 18, 20 and 25 percent so you can compare them at a glance.

A worked example

Suppose a dinner for four costs 86.00 before the tip. The table shows how the choice of rate changes the figures.

  • 15 percent: tip 12.90, total 98.90, 24.73 each.
  • 18 percent: tip 15.48, total 101.48, 25.37 each.
  • 20 percent: tip 17.20, total 103.20, 25.80 each.
  • 25 percent: tip 21.50, total 107.50, 26.88 each.
  • The step from 15 to 20 percent costs 4.30 in total, or 1.08 per person, which is a useful number when a group disagrees.

The arithmetic

The tip is the bill multiplied by the percentage divided by 100. The total is the bill plus the tip, and the per-person amount is the total divided by the number of people, rounded to cents only for display. The tool needs a bill greater than zero, treats a missing or zero number of people as one, and rounds a fractional number of people down. A zero percent tip is allowed. A quick mental shortcut for 20 percent is to move the decimal point one place to the left and double it: 86.00 becomes 8.60 and then 17.20.

Before or after tax

Many people in the United States tip on the pre-tax subtotal, while others tip on the total printed on the receipt. If you prefer the first approach, enter the subtotal as the bill to get the tip, then add the sales tax to the total yourself. The guide to adding and removing sales tax shows how, and the Sales Tax Calculator does the sum for you.

Tipping customs differ

A rate that is normal in one country can be unusual in another. In the United States, 15 to 20 percent is typical in a sit-down restaurant. In many other countries, a service charge is already added to the bill, or a small round-up is the custom, or tipping is not expected at all. Check whether the bill already includes service before you add anything, and if you are travelling, the Currency Converter helps you see the amount in your own money.

Splitting and limits

The calculator splits the total evenly. If people ordered very different amounts, work out each person's own subtotal first and enter it separately, or use the Percentage Calculator for each share. Amounts are shown in your own currency without a symbol, and nothing is sent anywhere.
