What htaccess Generator Tool does

The .htaccess Generator builds an Apache .htaccess file from a form: force HTTPS, always use or drop www (in a single redirect, not a chain), a custom 404 page, GZIP compression, browser caching, hidden folder listings, basic security headers, permanent 301 redirects and IP blocking. Addresses you type are validated so the file cannot contain broken directives, and you can copy or download it. It runs in your browser.

How to use htaccess Generator Tool

  1. Tick the options you need: HTTPS, compression, caching, folder listings, security headers
  2. Choose how to handle www, and set the custom 404 page path
  3. Add redirects one per line as "/old-page /new-page", and any IP addresses to block
  4. Copy or download the file and upload it to your site's root folder as .htaccess

Who should use it

Made for everyone. Typical uses:

  • Enabling browser caching headers to speed up repeat visits to a site
  • Blocking direct access to specific file types or directories
  • Setting up a custom 404 error page redirect

Limitations and accuracy

It is for Apache servers (including most shared hosting) and does not work on Nginx or on hosts that ignore .htaccess. The IP block needs Apache 2.4 or newer. Modules are wrapped so a missing module does not cause an error, but always keep a backup of your current .htaccess and test on a staging site, because a mistake can cause a 500 error.

Accuracy: Output is produced in your browser and is meant for convenience. Check it before you use it for anything important.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I upload the generated file?
To your website's root folder (often public_html), named exactly .htaccess. Back up any existing .htaccess first and merge the rules if you already have one.
Do I need to restart Apache?
No. Apache reads .htaccess on every request, so changes take effect immediately.
Why does the www and HTTPS redirect count as one hop?
The rules are combined so http://example.com goes straight to https://www.example.com in a single 301, which is better for speed and SEO than a chain of two redirects.
What if my host does not allow .htaccess overrides?
Some hosts ignore .htaccess or block certain directives. Ask your host to enable AllowOverride, or make the changes in your server configuration.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is built in your browser.
