Generate SEO-optimized meta tags for your web pages.
The Meta Tag Generator creates the HTML for a page's title, meta description, robots directive, canonical link, Open Graph tags (for Facebook, LinkedIn and WhatsApp previews) and Twitter Card tags. It counts characters against the lengths search results display, and escapes quotes and angle brackets so your text cannot break the tags. Copy the finished block into your page's <head>.
Made for everyone. Typical uses:
With the title "Free Word Counter", the description "Count words and characters instantly" and the page address https://example.com/word-counter, the generator writes a title element, a description tag, robots "index, follow", a canonical link, og:title, og:description and og:url, and the matching Twitter tags. Adding an image address adds og:image and twitter:image.
It generates tags for one page at a time and does not check that your image URL exists or is the right size (1200 × 630 works best for sharing). Google ignores the meta keywords tag, so it is optional and has no ranking effect. Titles and descriptions above about 60 and 160 characters are usually shortened in search results.
Accuracy: Output is produced in your browser and is meant for convenience. Check it before you use it for anything important.
Expert Tip
Give every page its own title and description, put the main words first, and check the share preview after you publish. The keywords tag is left empty by default because Google ignores it.
The Meta Tag Generator writes the block of HTML that goes in the head of a web page. You fill in the title and description, then optionally the page address, a share image, the author, a Twitter or X handle and the robots setting. The preview updates as you type, and the copy button copies the whole block. It includes the character set and viewport tags, the title, the meta description, the robots directive, a canonical link, Open Graph tags used by Facebook, LinkedIn and WhatsApp, and Twitter Card tags.
With the title "Free Word Counter" and the description "Count words and characters instantly", the generator writes a title element, a description tag and a robots tag of "index, follow", then the Open Graph title and description and a Twitter title and description. Add the page address https://example.com/word-counter and it also writes a canonical link and og:url. Add an image address and it adds og:image and twitter:image and switches the Twitter card from "summary" to "summary_large_image", so the image shows large in shares. Titles and descriptions are escaped, so a title such as A & B "Guide" becomes A & B "Guide" and cannot break the tag.
The counters turn orange at 60 characters for the title and 160 for the description, because search results usually cut text off beyond those points. Google actually measures the width in pixels, so a title full of wide letters can be shortened sooner. Put the most important words first, make each title and description unique across your site, and describe what the visitor will get. A description does not directly raise rankings, but a clear one can earn more clicks, and Google sometimes rewrites it to match the search.
The robots menu offers index or noindex combined with follow or nofollow. Leave it on "index, follow" for pages you want in search results, and use noindex for thank-you pages and internal search results. The canonical link tells search engines which address is the main version when the same content is reachable at several, and it should point to the clean address of the page itself. The keywords field is optional and left empty by default: Google has ignored the keywords tag for years, so it has no ranking effect and is included only for the few tools that still read it.
When the page address is shared, social networks read the Open Graph tags, and X reads the Twitter tags. A 1200 by 630 pixel image works well for both. The tool sets the Open Graph type to "website", which suits most pages, and the Twitter handle is written with a single @ whether or not you typed one. It does not check that your image address works, so open it in a browser before you publish. Test your finished page with the Open Graph Preview.
For a single page, this tool is enough. If you want help wording the text, the Meta Title Generator and Meta Description Generator suggest options, and the Open Graph Generator and Twitter Card Generator go deeper on social previews. For rich results, add structured data with the Schema Markup Generator. The guide to titles, descriptions and schema markup explains how they work together. Nothing you type is uploaded.
