What Video Compressor does

Video Compressor makes a video file smaller by re-encoding it as an H.264/AAC MP4, with your choice of maximum height (1080p down to 360p) and quality (high, balanced or smallest file). The result plays everywhere, is compared with the original size, and never leaves your device.

Features and benefits

  • Shrinks videos for email, messaging and upload limits without uploading them anywhere
  • Choose the maximum height and the quality, and see the exact size saved
  • Produces a standard H.264/AAC MP4 that plays on every phone, browser and editor
  • Private: the video is processed on your own device

How to use Video Compressor

  1. Choose a video (MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and most other formats)
  2. Pick a maximum height and a quality level
  3. Click Compress video and wait for the progress bar to finish
  4. Check the preview and the size saved, then download the MP4

Who should use it

Made for creators. Typical uses:

  • Shrinking a video to fit an upload size limit
  • Reducing a video's size before sending it by email
  • Compressing footage to save storage space

Example

A 2-minute 1080p phone video of about 180 MB can typically be brought down to roughly 20-40 MB by choosing 720p and Balanced quality, which is small enough to attach to most emails or upload to a form with a 25 MB limit. Results vary with the footage.

Limitations and accuracy

Compression is lossy: the smallest setting visibly reduces quality. Videos already smaller than the chosen height are not enlarged. The work happens in your browser, so it is slower than desktop software, and files over 500 MB are refused.

Accuracy: Video is processed with the open-source ffmpeg engine running in your browser and tested with sample clips. Check the result before you share it.

Expert Tip

Pick the lowest height that still looks fine on the screen where the video will be watched: 720p is plenty for phones and messaging, while 1080p is only worth keeping for large screens.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my video get?
It depends on the original. Phone and screen recordings often shrink by 50-90% at 720p with the balanced setting; videos that are already well compressed shrink less. The tool shows the exact saving.
Which setting should I use?
Balanced at 720p suits most sharing and email. Choose high quality when detail matters, and 360p with the smallest-file setting only when size is the priority.
Does it change the video format?
The result is always an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, which plays in every browser, phone and editor.
How large a video can I use?
Files up to 500 MB. Very large or high-resolution videos can take several minutes because a browser is slower than desktop software, and they need free memory, so close other heavy tabs first.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The video is processed on your own device by ffmpeg running inside your browser, so it never leaves your computer or phone. The first time you use any video tool, your browser downloads the video engine once (roughly 10 MB) and reuses it afterwards.
