What MP4 to MP3 does

MP4 to MP3 extracts the sound from a video and saves it as a real MP3 file at 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps. It works with MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and most other video formats, and you can preview the audio before downloading. The conversion runs in your browser and the video is never uploaded.

How to use MP4 to MP3

  1. Choose a video file
  2. Pick the MP3 quality (192 kbps is a good default)
  3. Click Convert to MP3 and wait for it to finish
  4. Play the preview and download the MP3

Who should use it

Made for creators. Typical uses:

  • Saving a podcast or talk that was recorded as a video, as audio only
  • Extracting music or a soundtrack from a video file
  • Creating an audio-only version of a recording to save space

Limitations and accuracy

The video must contain an audio track; if it has none the tool says so. MP3 is a lossy format, so re-encoding already compressed audio cannot improve its quality. Files over 500 MB are refused.

Accuracy: Video is processed with the open-source ffmpeg engine running in your browser and tested with sample clips. Check the result before you share it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the output a real MP3?
Yes. The audio is encoded with the LAME MP3 encoder, so the file plays in any player, phone or car stereo.
Which bitrate should I choose?
192 kbps is a good balance of size and quality for speech and music. Use 128 kbps for small podcast files and 256 or 320 kbps for music you want to keep at the highest quality.
Does it work with formats other than MP4?
Yes. MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and most other video files work, as long as they contain sound.
How large a video can I use?
Files up to 500 MB. Very large or high-resolution videos can take several minutes because a browser is slower than desktop software, and they need free memory, so close other heavy tabs first.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The video is processed on your own device by ffmpeg running inside your browser, so it never leaves your computer or phone. The first time you use any video tool, your browser downloads the video engine once (roughly 10 MB) and reuses it afterwards.
Which video formats are supported?
MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and most other common formats, as long as they use a codec the built-in ffmpeg engine can read. If a file cannot be read, the tool tells you instead of producing a broken result.
